Birth flower for March 2
Rapeseed flower
Meaning: Cheerfulness
Rapeseed is grown for the oil pressed from its seeds; canola oil comes from low-erucic-acid varieties bred in Canada. In Taiwan, farmers often sow rapeseed in rice paddies after the autumn harvest as green manure: fields glow gold all winter, then the plants are plowed back in to feed the next rice crop. In Japan, the tender flower buds, called nanohana, are a favorite taste of spring.
