Birth flower for March 1
Tulip
Meaning: Perfect love
The word tulip is usually traced to the Persian and Turkish word for "turban", after the flower's shape. In the 1630s the Netherlands was gripped by "tulip mania", when rare bulbs sold for astonishing prices, often called one of the first speculative bubbles. The most prized flame-striped blooms, it turned out much later, owed their pattern to a virus.
