Birth flower for July 23
Sea holly
Meaning: silent love
Sea holly looks like a thistle but belongs to the carrot and parsley family. The roots of the coastal species were once candied and sold as sweets called eryngoes, believed to be an aphrodisiac, and Shakespeare mentions them in The Merry Wives of Windsor. The steel-blue heads keep their color when dried, so florists love them.
