Sasanqua camellia

Sasanqua camellia

Meaning: Overcoming hardship

Sasanqua is a close cousin of the common camellia, and the easiest way to tell them apart is how the flowers fall. A camellia drops its whole bloom, while a sasanqua sheds petal by petal, carpeting the ground in pink. Its Japanese name sazanka is said to come from a reshuffled reading of the characters for mountain tea flower. In Japan it marks early winter and appears in the children's song Takibi.
