Daimonjiso saxifrage

Daimonjiso saxifrage

Meaning: freedom, goodwill

Daimonjiso is a saxifrage whose five petals, three short ones on top and two long ones below, look like the kanji for big. The name recalls the giant character lit on a Kyoto mountainside each August. Wild plants are usually white, but Japanese growers have bred many pink, red and double forms, and it is a favorite autumn alpine plant.
