Birth flower for October 20
Drunken cotton rose
Meaning: delicate beauty
This double-flowered form of the cotton rose opens white in the morning, turns pink by afternoon and deep rosy red by evening, like someone slowly getting tipsy, which gives it its name. Each flower lasts only one day, so a single shrub often shows white, pink and red blooms at once. In Yatsuo, Toyama, it is famously in bloom during the Owara Kaze no Bon festival in early September.
