Birth flower for October 4
Chocolate cosmos
Meaning: Memories of love
This dark maroon cosmos really does smell of chocolate and vanilla. It comes from Mexico but is thought to be extinct in the wild, and most plants in gardens today descend by division from a single clone brought to Europe around 1902. Because that clone rarely sets seed, gardeners kept it going by splitting its tuberous roots for over a century.
