Birth flower for September 10
Toad lily
Meaning: forever yours, a hidden will
Its petals are freckled with purple spots, and every culture saw something different in them: Chinese speakers saw drops of oil, the Japanese saw the speckled breast of the hototogisu cuckoo, and English speakers saw a toad's mottled skin. Taiwan even has its own species, Tricyrtis formosana, named for Formosa.
