Birth flower for September 5
Patrinia
Meaning: Beauty, kindness
Patrinia is one of Japan's Seven Flowers of Autumn, named in a poem by Yamanoue no Okura in the eighth-century Man'yoshu. Its Japanese name means something like maiden flower, for its slender grace, and a white cousin is called the man flower. The Chinese name means spoiled bean paste, because the roots and vase water give off a sour, fermented smell.
