Fujibakama is one of Japan's Seven Flowers of Autumn; its name pairs wisteria color with hakama, the pleated trousers its tubular florets resemble. Dried leaves smell like sakura mochi, and Heian courtiers carried it for its scent. The long-distance chestnut tiger butterfly adores its nectar, yet wild plants have grown scarce and the species is listed as near threatened in Japan.
