Birth flower for September 1
Bush clover
Meaning: contemplation, shyness, a gentle spirit
In Japan, bush clover (hagi) heads the list of the Seven Autumn Herbs and is the plant mentioned most often in the Man'yōshū, Japan's oldest poetry anthology — more than plum or cherry. Its arching branches drip with tiny magenta pea flowers that scatter at the slightest breeze, a picture of gentle autumn melancholy. Even the sweet rice treat ohagi is named for it.
