Birth flower for August 25
Cape plumbago
Meaning: quiet passion
Cape plumbago covers itself in clusters of cool sky blue flowers right in the heat of summer, when blue flowers are rare. The name comes from the Latin word for lead, since people once believed it could treat lead poisoning. Its calyx is covered in sticky hairs that cling to clothes and insects, helping the seeds hitch a ride.
