Birth flower for August 7
Wishbone flower
Meaning: Lovely desire
Torenia is called the wishbone flower because the two stamens inside each bloom touch at their tips, forming a shape like a chicken's wishbone. Its name honors Olof Torén, an eighteenth century Swedish chaplain who collected plants in China and Southeast Asia on trading voyages. In Japan it is nicknamed the summer violet.
