Birth flower for August 3
Impatiens
Meaning: impatience; touch-me-not
Impatiens is Latin for 'impatient': touch a ripe seed pod and it bursts open, flinging seeds far and wide — hence the nickname touch-me-not. In China, Korea and Japan, girls once crushed balsam petals to dye their fingernails, so the flower is also called 'nail flower' in Chinese and was known in old Japan as tsumakurenai, 'red nails'.
