Birth flower for August 2

Four o'clock

Four o'clock

Meaning: timidity

It opens in the late afternoon, which gives it its English name; in Taiwan it is called the cooking-rice flower because it opens around dinner time. One plant can bear magenta, yellow, white and streaked flowers, and botanist Carl Correns used it to study inheritance. The black seeds hold a white powder, hence the Japanese name face-powder flower.
