Birth flower for July 14
Petunia
Meaning: your presence soothes me
The name petunia comes from a South American Indigenous word for tobacco — fitting, since petunias belong to the same nightshade family as tobacco and look a bit like it. In 1989 Japan's Suntory launched 'Surfinia', a trailing petunia that tumbles over pots in waterfalls of colour, and it turned petunias into the go-to flower for balconies and hanging baskets.
