Birth flower for July 12
Zinnia
Meaning: Thoughts of absent friends
Its Chinese and Japanese name means "hundred-day flower," a nod to how it blooms nonstop from summer into autumn. The genus is named after 18th-century German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn. In 2016, astronauts on the International Space Station coaxed a zinnia into bloom, one of the first flowers grown there and proof that plants can flower in microgravity.
