Birth flower for June 9
Larkspur
Meaning: lightness, levity
Each flower has a long spur sticking out behind it. In English that spur reminded people of a lark's hind claw, while the Japanese and Chinese names, chidori-so, see a flock of flying plovers. Its species name, ajacis, refers to the Greek hero Ajax; legend says markings on the petals spell out letters of his name. It is a close annual cousin of the delphinium.
