Birth flower for May 25
Japanese snowbell
Meaning: grandeur
Its Japanese name, egonoki, is said to come from egoi, the harsh, throat-scratching taste of its fruit skin. The skin is rich in saponins, so people once crushed the fruit to wash clothes like soap, and even used it to stun fish in streams. In early summer white bells hang in rows beneath the branches, then drop and carpet the ground.
