Birth flower for May 24
Weigela
Meaning: abundant beauty
Weigela is named after the German botanist Christian Ehrenfried Weigel. In Japan this species fills the mountain valleys along the Sea of Japan side in early summer, right when rice is planted, so in some regions it is called the rice-planting flower and its blooming told farmers when to start. Its funnel-shaped flowers line the arching branches like a ribbon.
