Birth flower for April 28
California poppy
Meaning: hope and success
The state flower of California can turn whole hillsides orange in spring. Early Spanish sailors are said to have called the golden slopes a 'cup of gold'. The flowers open only in sunshine and roll their four silky petals shut at night and on cloudy days. Its Japanese name means 'hanabishi plant', because the flower resembles the hanabishi diamond crest used in family emblems.
