Birth flower for April 6
Dogwood
Meaning: Thank you, durability
The four white 'petals' of a dogwood are really bracts; the true flowers are the tiny greenish cluster in the center. Dogwoods also have a diplomatic story: after Tokyo gave Washington, D.C. its famous cherry trees in 1912, the United States sent flowering dogwoods to Japan in 1915 as a thank-you. The Asian kousa dogwood, the tree known in Chinese as sizhaohua, bears red, strawberry-like fruit that is edible.
