Birth flower for April 3
Lilac
Meaning: First love
The lilac's botanical name, Syringa, comes from the Greek word for 'pipe'. In myth, the nymph Syrinx escaped the god Pan by turning into reeds, and Pan cut those reeds into his famous pan pipes. In Europe, the pale purple blooms became a symbol of first love, and when lilacs open in late spring, whole streets fill with their sweet, heady perfume.
