Birth flower for March 9
Hyacinth
Meaning: Constancy, joy
The hyacinth is named for Hyacinthus, a youth in Greek myth who was struck and killed by a discus while playing with the god Apollo; the grieving god made a flower spring from his blood. Hyacinths later became a craze in 18th-century Holland, where breeders produced huge numbers of varieties. A single pot can fill a whole room with the sweet smell of spring.
