Birth flower for February 29
Hepatica
Meaning: trust, patience
The name Hepatica comes from the Greek for liver, because the three-lobed leaves were thought to resemble one, and in the Middle Ages the plant was even used for liver complaints. In Japan it is called yukiwariso, snow-breaking flower, for blooming among the last snow. The colorful parts are actually sepals, ranging from white and pink to purple and blue, and Japanese growers collect many named forms.
