Kawazu cherry
Meaning: spiritual beauty
In 1955 Katsumi Iida found a young cherry seedling on the bank of the Kawazu River in Shizuoka and planted it in his garden. It turned out to be a natural hybrid, thought to be between Oshima cherry and Taiwan cherry. It opens in February, is pinker than Somei-yoshino and lasts about a month, and the riverside now hosts a Kawazu cherry festival every year.
