Red plum is the group of Japanese apricot varieties with crimson or deep pink flowers, many of them double. Heian court nobles adored it, and The Pillow Book praises its beauty. In the Edo period Ogata Korin painted the national treasure Red and White Plum Blossoms, a red tree and a white tree facing each other across a stylised stream, one of the best known works of Japanese art.
