Birth flower for February 5
Daphne
Meaning: glory, immortality
Winter daphne is usually smelled before it is seen: in late winter its small pink-and-white clusters pour out a rich, sweet perfume. The genus is named for Daphne, the nymph of Greek myth who became a laurel, because its leaves look like bay. In Japan it is jinchoge, one of the country's three great fragrant shrubs alongside summer gardenia and autumn sweet osmanthus, and its scent means spring is coming.
