Birth flower for January 15
Ornamental kale
Meaning: blessing
Ornamental kale is a cabbage grown for its leaves, not its flowers. Kale brought to Japan from the Netherlands in the Edo period was bred there into decorative forms called habotan, 'leaf peony', and its red and white colors made it a New Year decoration. The center only turns pink or white after a run of cold nights.
