Birth flower for January 14
Calendula
Meaning: Grief, and gentle care
The name Calendula comes from the Latin for the first day of the month, a nod to how it seems to bloom in almost every month. The flowers open by day and close at night or under clouds. In old Europe the petals were used to color butter, cheese and soup, earning the nickname poor man's saffron. Its Chinese and Japanese name means golden cup.
