Birth flower for January 16
Winter jasmine
Meaning: grace, hope for new beginnings
Its Chinese name means “welcoming spring”, because it bursts into yellow bloom on bare green stems at winter’s end, before any leaves appear. In Japan it is called “yellow plum” for flowering alongside the plum blossoms. Although it is a true jasmine, it has almost no scent. Its long, arching stems tumble over walls and banks like a golden waterfall.
