Birth flower for January 13
Stock
Meaning: lasting beauty
The name stock once meant 'stem' or 'trunk': its woody stalk set it apart from the carnation, which shared the old name gillyflower. Its spicy, clove-like scent makes it a winter and spring florist favorite. Double flowers set no seed, so Japanese seed breeders developed strains whose seedlings reveal which plants will be doubles by the color of their first leaves.
