Its flat seed pods are shaped like upside-down hearts, said to resemble the leather pouches shepherds once wore on their belts. In Japan it is nazuna, one of the seven herbs of spring, and because the pods look like a shamisen pick it is also called penpen-gusa. In Chinese cooking it is a classic spring filling for wontons and dumplings.
