Birth flower for December 20
Rieger begonia
Meaning: kindness
Rieger begonias are a strain improved by the German breeder Otto Rieger in the mid twentieth century, and are also sold as Elatior or winter-flowering begonias. Their parents are a begonia from the island of Socotra off Yemen and the tuberous begonias of South America. The semi-double, rose-like flowers fill florists from winter into spring.
