Birth flower for December 1
Paperwhite narcissus
Meaning: mystery
Its species name papyraceus means papery, for the thin, pure white flowers. It is a favorite for growing indoors: set the bulbs on pebbles, add water, and they bloom in about four to six weeks. Researchers at Cornell University found that a little alcohol in the water keeps the stems shorter and sturdier so they don't flop.
