Double sasanqua

Double sasanqua

Meaning: overcoming adversity

Sasanqua sheds its petals one at a time, while a camellia drops the whole flower, which is the easiest way to tell them apart. Many of the double sasanquas in gardens are actually Camellia hiemalis types such as 'Shishigashira', which keep flowering from late autumn into midwinter. In Japan they are a classic hedge plant, and the children's song Takibi sings of a path lined with sasanqua in bloom.
