Birth flower for October 10
Leopard plant
Meaning: humility, resilience
Its Japanese name, tsuwabuki, is thought to come from words meaning glossy-leaved butterbur. It blooms bright yellow in early winter, when few other flowers are out, and thrives in shade, so it is a fixture of Japanese gardens. In Kyushu people boil and soak the young leaf stalks to remove bitterness and eat them simmered in soy sauce.
