Birth flower for October 2
Gentian
Meaning: justice, victory, loving you when you're sad
The Chinese name means "dragon's gall," because the root is as bitter as bile. The scientific name Gentiana honors Gentius, an ancient king of Illyria said to have discovered its healing powers, and gentian root still flavors herbal bitters today. Its intense blue flowers close up on cloudy days and at night, opening again when the sun returns.
