Birth flower for September 30
Rice flower
Meaning: sacredness, abundance
Rice really does flower, though without petals. On a sunny morning each tiny floret cracks open its husk, lets its pale anthers dangle out, and closes again within an hour or two. Rice mostly pollinates itself, so it hardly needs bees. Every grain in a bowl of rice began as one of these brief little flowers.
