Birth flower for September 18
Abyssinian gladiolus
Meaning: fragrance
Once placed in its own genus, Acidanthera, this plant is now counted as a gladiolus. Its name murielae honors Muriel Erskine, who collected it in Ethiopia, formerly called Abyssinia. Nodding white flowers with a dark purple blotch hang from slender stems, each trailing a long thin tube, and their scent grows stronger toward evening, often compared to jasmine.
