Birth flower for September 17
Golden spider lily
Meaning: remembrance, a caring heart
Its leaves die back in summer, then a bare stalk shoots up and blooms almost overnight, so the Chinese call it "suddenly smiling". The Japanese name compares the curled petals and long stamens to the bristling beard of Shoki, the demon-queller of folk legend. Like its red cousin, the bulb is poisonous.
