Birth flower for August 28
Cardinal flower
Meaning: distinction
It is named after the bright red robes worn by Catholic cardinals. The flowers are long and deep, so most insects can't reach the nectar, and in North America they are pollinated mainly by ruby-throated hummingbirds. Because it can grow fully submerged, it is also sold as an aquarium plant.
