Gladiolus

Gladiolus

Meaning: Strength, victory

Gladiolus comes from the Latin gladius, 'sword', after its long pointed leaves — the same root as 'gladiator'. Its flowers open one after another from the bottom of the spike to the top. In Taiwan that upward climb symbolizes rising step by step in life, so gladioli are a favourite for Lunar New Year and temple offerings.
