Birth flower for June 18
Yarrow
Meaning: healing, courage in battle
Yarrow's Latin name, Achillea, honors the Greek hero Achilles, who legend says used it to stop his soldiers' wounds from bleeding; millefolium means 'thousand leaves', for its feathery foliage. In ancient China, yarrow stalks were counted out to cast the hexagrams of the I Ching. The Japanese name nokogirisō, 'saw grass', refers to its toothed leaves.
