Birth flower for June 16
Spiderwort
Meaning: momentary happiness
Each spiderwort flower usually opens for a single morning and folds up by afternoon. The purple hairs on its stamens are chains of single cells, and some of them change color when exposed to radiation, so scientists have used the plant as a living radiation and pollution detector. Its genus name honors the English gardeners named Tradescant.
