Birth flower for June 13
Passion flower
Meaning: faith and holy love
Spanish missionaries in South America saw the story of Christ's Passion in this strange bloom: the frilly corona was the crown of thorns, the five stamens the five wounds, and the three stigmas the nails. So it became the passion flower. In Japan the same flower looked like a clock face, earning the name tokeisō, 'clock plant'. The passion fruit you drink in juice comes from a member of this family.
