Birth flower for May 10
Carnation
Meaning: A mother's love
In 1908, Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her late mother in the United States and handed out white carnations, her mother's favorite flower. Her campaign grew into Mother's Day, and the carnation has been its flower ever since. The genus name Dianthus comes from Greek and is often read as "flower of the gods," and old-fashioned types carry a spicy, clove-like scent.
