A legend says that in the Garden of Gethsemane every flower bowed to Jesus except the crown imperial. Once rebuked, it lowered its bells and has held 'tears' inside ever since, which are really drops of nectar from its glands. Its bulbs give off a musky, foxy smell, and gardeners have long planted it hoping to keep moles and mice away.
