Birth flower for April 10
Bleeding heart
Meaning: compassion
Each pink flower is shaped like a heart, with white inner petals poking out of the bottom like a falling drop, hence the dramatic English name. In Chinese it is the purse peony, for the little purse-like flowers and peony-like leaves. The Japanese name compares it to keman, hanging ornaments in Buddhist temples. Once summer heat arrives the whole plant dies back and sleeps underground.
