Dendrobium
Meaning: wisdom and beauty
Dendrobium means 'living on trees' in Greek, since most cling to bark or rocks. In China dried dendrobium stems have long been a prized traditional medicine, while Japan's native sekkoku was collected and fussed over as 'long-life orchid' in the Edo period. Singapore's National Orchid Garden names new hybrids after visiting VIPs, and many of these celebrity orchids are dendrobiums.
